The Municipality currently operates a small wastewater system in Chester Basin that serves five properties with extremely limited capacity. It is a Class 1 facility that treats wastewater using an intermittent sand filter with chlorine disinfection. It has reached the end of its useful life and is increasingly vulnerable to coastal flooding.

Expanding wastewater services in Chester Basin will create a sustainable foundation for present and potential growth in the Chester Basin area. We will use modern, modular wastewater treatment technology, which means the new system will be sustainable, environmentally stable, and can readily expand to meet community growth. It will include a new treatment plant, an expanded collection and transmission system, a new wastewater forcemain and lift station, and a replacement outfall, allowing for improved effluent dilution and environmental protection.

Most importantly, the new plant will be located well above the coastal flood risk zone. The new plant will have the capacity to fully serve properties already connected, permitting existing and surrounding commercial locations to realize their potential as well as servicing a large section of residential properties in that area. After completion, we will be able to accommodate over 650 connections with potential to expand.

Construction and commissioning of the new wastewater treatment plant are expected to be completed by the Fall of 2027.
